چکیده

The design and parameters of the IHEP–JINR neutrino detector, the largest experimental setup at the U-70 accelerator (IHEP, Protvino), is described. The main detector components (the drift chambers, the liquid-scintillator counters, the detector of electromagnetic showers, and the magnetic system) are described in detail. The organization of the on-line data-acquisition system and the off-line software is outlined. The main characteristics of the detector are presented. The basic physical results obtained with the setup are briefly described.

The concept of a very long baseline neutrino experiment with quasi monochromatic neutrino beam and very large area underground detector is discussed. The detector could be placed in the existing 20 km tunnel at IHEP, Protvino. The High Intensity Proton Accelerators (HIPA) which are planned to be built in Japan (JAERI-KEK, baseline of ∼ 7000 km) and Germany (GSI, baseline of ∼ 2000 km) as well a...

Crystal experiments on efficient beam extraction

Silicon crystal was channeling and extracting 70-GeV protons from the U-70 accelerator with efficiency of 85.3±2.8% as measured for a beam of ∼10 12 protons directed towards crystals of ∼2 mm length in spills of ∼2 s duration. The experimental data follow very well the prediction of Monte Carlo simulations. This success is important to devise a more efficient use of the U-70 accelerator in Prot...

Future Neutrino Oscillation Facilities

An outline of the present and future long-baseline neutrino facilities with emphasis on the possibilities at CERN is presented. Accelerator-made neutrinos for long-baseline oscillation experiments open the exploration to a broad and rather interesting field of physics experiments, with the measurement of the neutrino mixing angle (θ13), the determination of the sign of neutrino mass hierarchy (...

Underground Neutrino Detectors for Particle and Astroparticle Science: the Giant Liquid Argon Charge Imaging ExpeRiment (GLACIER)

The current focus of the CERN program is the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), however, CERN is engaged in long baseline neutrino physics with the CNGS project and supports T2K as recognized CERN RE13, and for good reasons: a number of observed phenomena in high-energy physics and cosmology lack their resolution within the Standard Model of particle physics; these puzzles include the origin of neutr...

Accelerator Neutrino Beams

Neutrino beams at from high-energy proton accelerators have been instrumental discovery tools in particle physics. Neutrino beams are derived from the decays of charged π and K mesons, which in turn are created from proton beams striking thick nuclear targets. The precise selection and manipulation of the π/K beam control the energy spectrum and type of neutrino beam. This article describes the...
